Did you know that the history of Canada as its own country all began on July 1, 1867, when the British North American Act (now known as the Constitution Act) created Canada? Then, on June 20, 1868, Governor General Lord Monck signed a proclamation requesting all Her Majesty’s subjects across Canada to celebrate Canada Day on July 1. in 1879, a federal law was passed to make July 1 a statutory holiday as the “anniversary of Confederation,” later renamed “Dominion Day.” Learn more about the history of Canadian celebrations here.
